The secret to losing weight!? What can we learn from the least obese countries in the world?

According to the World Population Review 2022, Madagascar, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Timor-Leste, Burundi, Japan, China, India, Bangladesh and Burkina Faso are the top 10 least obese countries in the world. They argue that Japan's presence on the top list is not surprising because of their very healthy diet compared to other countries on this list that struggle with famine and poverty. However, starving doesn't necessarily lead to losing weight (D. Benton, 2017). So, what do these countries have in common to make the top list of the least obese in the world? Famine and poverty is definitely out of the question! Super Bio Boost would like to have a more positive approach in analysing what could be their common denomin

After collecting and analysing the data on the lifestyles, habits and diets of people from these countries, unsurprisingly, we have discovered that they all have one thing in common:” regular consumption of fermented foods and drinks”.

For instance, people in:

  • Burkina faso have in their daily diet “Dèguè”, a traditional fermented food made of pearl millet dough;

  • Eritrea and Ethiopia, they use teff, sorghum, enset, milk to make traditional fermented foods such as injera, kocho, siljo, and ergo;

  • Burundi, they consume cassava-based fermented foods such as Ikivunde, Inyange, Imikembe and Ubswage.

It is clear that there are some similarities between these countries and Japan, where people also consume a lot of fermented foods such as miso and natto, which are fermented soybean products traditionally eaten at breakfast.

Let’s now have a look at the health benefits of eating fermented food. Traditionally, fermentation was used to preserve foods, enhance shelf life, and improve flavour, but in recent years, it was discovered that fermented foods have antioxidant, anti-microbial, anti-fungal, anti-inflammatory, anti-diabetic and anti-atherosclerotic effects (Şanlier N, 2019).

According to recent studies, consuming some fermented foods might help to lose weight, and this could be the reason why the above mentioned countries are on the top list of the least obese countries in the world as they eat a considerable amount of fermented food on a daily basis.

If you are looking at introducing fermented foods in your daily diet, and may be trying to lose weight, we recommend the following:
